YDC Programs Transition to Virtual
Over the course of Summer 2020, the Youth Design Center (formerly Made in Brownsville) has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by initiating online tech and design instruction. We’ve introduced new projects, such as our Virtual Studios program and one-week virtual summer camps. This fall, we are transitioning our more intensive training opportunities, such as the Creative Apprenticeship Program (CAP), to an online format.
Traditionally, our programming has been hands-on and immersive, connecting young people in East Brooklyn with in-depth mentorship from design professionals. Fully adapting this work to the demands presented by the pandemic is our biggest challenge yet. However, with your support, we are confident that we will be able to adjust our offerings in ways that maintain their high quality and deep interactivity. Your donation will help us defray added costs required to modify program elements in ways that ensure safe and educationally rigorous experiences for our youth, including:
- The purchase of laptops we are loaning to virtual programming participants who do not have access to technology at home
- The compilation of take-home design kits so that students can engage in projects and portfolio-building remotely
- The acquisition of additional licenses to provide access to software for virtual programming participants
The Youth Design Center (formerly Made in Brownsville) is the first non-profit, youth-led creative agency and innovation hub in East Brooklyn. We provide gateways for young people to learn marketable design and tech skills, access postsecondary education, achieve economic mobility, and engage in placed-based community revitalization. We are a 501(c)3 organization on a mission to reduce the number of disconnected youth by lowering their barriers to entry to the STEAM professions and increasing their relevant experience in the innovation economy. Your donation is 100% tax deductible.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges to our work at a time when the need to connect our young people with STEAM skills and employment opportunities is all the more pressing due to the volatility of current economic circumstances. With your support, our young people can become prominent design and technology agents of the next generation as well as visionary civic leaders at the forefront of social justice. Donate today to help us continue our commitment to investing in bright futures for East Brooklyn youth.
